This childrens’ village is one of the most significant projects launched by Veherahena temple with the patronage of OBA-MAMA Association in Japan. The motto of this organization is “Universal Loving Kindness”. This association has been recognized as a charitable organization according to the terms of the Gazette notification No 1220 of 18th January 2002.

Oba-Mama children village is situated at a breathtaking environment in Kekanadura about 9.km from Matara on the Matara yatiyana road. The area of the land is 2 ½ acres. The “childrens’ village” project is supported by of Japanese Ministry of post and telecommunication, with the funds from postal savings for international voluntary aid.
It was declared open on 12th March 1995 with the participation of Japanese delegates. Started with 11 children and gradually expanding, our motive is to rehabilitate children who are deserted, orphaned and victimized.

This village consists of all the necessary features for the functionality of the childrens’ village. There are four hostels, an assembly hall which can accommodate eight hundred people, a large playground, a shrine room, a library, dining room with a kitchen and recreational facilities.

Miss T.H Chandra has been working as the chief matron since 1995. Since then 166 children have be rehabilitated and currently are employed in various private sector and government organizations. At present there are fifteen children who attend the government schools in the area.

Mr.Sunil Wanigarathne a former army officer is the warden of the hostel and Mr.D.G. Siriwardane is the coordinator. They are enthusiastic workers and dedicate themselves to uplift the institute.
